Intranet
Working in a team of multiple developers and with each team member juggling more than one project at a time, there was a great need to create a centralized information portal where everyone could update the others of what was done.
Looking at how the projects were doled out at the company level, it seemed practical to go with a task oriented design. As soon as an employee logs in, a week calendar defaulted to the current day shows all the tasks that are supposed to be started on that day. A navigation menu on the left highlights the most important portions of the intranet.
The project landing page shows a few of the most recent projects that the employee last worked on. This information is obtained from the notes the employee updates for the project which is tied to the billing component.
Each project gets its own page and it is divided into little chunks of information to make it more scannable. Right on top, the main details of the project is laid out, such as the estimated time to complete the project, the actual time taken, the percentage completed, begin and end dates. A tabbed interface below divides other information such as the project phases, messages, documents and issues.
Just a little off the main content area, lies a just-in-time (JIT) information that highlights the employees currently working on the project, the client contact for the particular project and a global search textbox.
By focusing on making the intranet a go-to portal for all information pertaining to a project, it certainly improved efficiency and knowledge management.
